About This Course

Nightmares are a common phenomenon of the sleep-wake cycle, with up to 85% of individuals reporting experiences of nightmares at some point in their lives and 2% - 8% of individuals reporting chronic or severe nightmares which impact their ability to achieve restorative sleep. Although not frequently the primary presenting problem which brings individuals to psychological treatment, individuals presenting for the treatment of PTSD, depression, anxiety, other sleep disorders, or medical illnesses may be more vulnerable to nightmares. Individuals may also be more likely to experience this sleep disturbance as the result of adverse effects of a medication or other substance. Imagery Rehearsal Therapy (IRT) is a brief evidence-based intervention that may bring relief to those experiencing nightmares. This workshop will provide an overview of the phenomenon of nightmares, distinguish nightmares from other sleep disturbances, and provide instruction on the utilizing IRT to address nightmares in psychological treatment.
