About This Course

Unrealistic beauty standards and perfectionistic expectations of physical appearance have been long-standing norms of our society and are reflected across contemporary life. They can be seen in our families, our communities, our work cultures, our leisure activities, and in other aspects of daily living. The ideals promoted by social media on the way we view ourselves and others are consequential. From digital tools that alter images and augmented reality beauty filters to Tik Tok and Reel makeup tutorials, we are constantly bombarded with images of quixotic beauty. When individuals are experiencing body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs), such as hair pulling, skin picking, or nail biting, the promotion of such ideals can have a particularly negative impact on self-concept and present challenges to treatment and recovery. Furthermore, the value placed on hair, skin, and nails vary across ethnic groups, gender identities and sexual orientations, and may present additional challenges to care. This workshop will examine historical standards of beauty and their impact on self-esteem, value assigned by others, and mental health. The importance of considering these factors in case conceptualization will be discussed. Case examples will be presented to demonstrate how treatment outcomes may be improved by addressing these important factors in an individualized, integrative behavioral treatment of these disorders.

Recommended Companion Materials: The BFRB Recovery Workbook: Effective Recovery from Hair Pulling, Skin Picking, Nail Biting, and Other Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors.

A portion of the proceeds of this training is donated to BFRB Changemakers. BFRB Changemakers non-profit (EIN #93-1544492) supports BFRB healing through community. Through the BFRB Changemakers Training Academy we strive to increase access to care by offering Continuing Education training to new and seasoned mental health treatment professionals.
