About This Course

The preoccupation with one's physical/mental health is more commonly labeled health anxiety. Health anxiety, which affects 4-10% of the population, is typically treated with Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), which is recognized as the leading intervention this psychiatric condition. Consultation with medical providers, attention to cultural considerations that impact health disparities, and recognizing differences between psychological, physical, and genuine medical symptoms is critical for success treatment planning. This presentation will review differential diagnostic considerations, developing a case formulation, and learning about leading evidenced-based interventions that can be used to help manage and treat health anxiety presentations.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify and differentiate the presenting disorders associated with health anxiety, including Illness Anxiety Disorder and Somatic Symptom Disorder, and differentiate them from similar psychiatric conditions.


  • Identify and list the leading evidence-based assessment tools for health anxiety.


  • Identify and describe the common symptoms associated with the various health anxiety presentations, including triggers, obsessions, and compulsions.


  • Identify evidenced-based interventions used to eliminate rituals, embrace anxiety, and prioritize values-based life activities in the treatment of health anxiety.

Dr. Josh Spitalnick is a Licensed Psychologist and Board Certified in Behavioral/Cognitive Psychology (ABPP). He is CEO/Founder of Anxiety Specialists of Atlanta, specializing in the treatment of OCD, anxiety disorders, health anxiety and pediatric anxiety. He trains/supervises clinicians in CBT, ERP, and other evidence-based interventions. He serves on faculty for the Behavior Therapy Training Institute for the IOCDF and he is an active fundraiser for the IOCDF with his team “OCD Avengers.” Dr. Spitalnick is co-author of the book "The Complete Guide to Overcoming Health Anxiety: How to Live Life to the Fullest...Because You're Not Dead (Yet)" (2023). He has co-authored over 30 peer-reviewed articles, book chapters, and treatment manuals.
