About This Course

Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS) will be described in detail. Critical aspects of clinic evaluation from the medical/physical and psychological perspectives will be reviewed, along with a recommended interdisciplinary treatment planning approach. Medical/physical and psychological treatment philosophy of AMPS will be discussed. An overview of the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s intensive AMPS Program will be presented as an evidence-based approach to integrated care, accompanied by a short patient video. Translation of care into an outpatient model will be reviewed, highlighting the importance of systems integration, including recommendations for partnering with others and reducing care disparities. Case examples will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the diagnosis of Pediatric Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS).


  • Describe the medical/physical approach to the evaluation and treatment of AMPS, including identifying at least 3 key aspects of treatment.


  • Describe the role of psychology in an interdisciplinary treatment approach, including both in the evaluation and treatment of AMPS.

Jennifer Sherker, Psy.D.

Assistant Professor of Clinical Psychiatry (Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania)

Dr. Sherker joined the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as a pediatric psychologist in the Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndrome (AMPS) Program in 2006, serving in this role for the past 18 years. Dr. Sherker provides interdisciplinary clinic evaluation, interdisciplinary intensive AMPS treatment, and outpatient AMPS treatment, as well as engaging in research in AMPS. She is the Clinical Director for Psychosocial Services within the AMPS Program, as well as across the Anesthesiology Pain Service, Neurology Headache Service, and Acquired Autonomic Dysfunction Program (AADP). She recently co-developed CHOP’s Functional Neurologic Symptoms Disorder (FND) clinic and co-lead the development of CHOP’s Emergency Department and Inpatient Clinical Pathway for Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders (SSRDs) published in 2023. In addition to her clinical and director roles, Dr. Sherker is a leader in Behavioral Health Quality and Safety at CHOP.
