About This Course

Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) will be described in detail. Critical aspects of clinical evaluation from the medical/physical and psychological perspectives will be reviewed, along with a recommended interdisciplinary treatment planning approach. Evidence-based medical/physical and psychological treatment philosophy of POTS will be discussed. Translation of care into an outpatient model will be reviewed, highlighting the importance of systems integration, including recommendations for partnering with others. Case examples will be discussed.

Learning Objectives

At the completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the diagnosis of Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS).
  • Describe the medical/physical approach to the evaluation and treatment of POTS, including identifying at least 3 key aspects of treatment.
  • Describe the role of psychology in the evaluation and treatment of POTS and apply strategies to treatment in the outpatient setting.
  • Discuss how to partner with systems (including medical providers, PT/OT providers, and schools) to provide comprehensive, integrated care to those diagnosed with POTS.

Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry (Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania)

Dr. Sherker is an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychiatry within the Perelman School of Medicine at The University of Pennsylvania who joined the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) as Clinical Director of Pain, Amplified Musculoskeletal Pain Syndromes (AMPS), & Acquired Autonomic Dysfunction (AADP) at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. She co-developed CHOP’s Functional Neurologic Symptoms Disorder (FND) clinic and co-lead the development of CHOP’s Emergency Department and Inpatient Clinical Pathway for Somatic Symptom and Related Disorders (SSRDs). In addition to her clinical and director roles, Dr. Sherker is a leader in Behavioral Health Quality and Safety at CHOP.
